Netbook Tablet Hybrid

Tablet vs. Netbook. Many of us have wondered what is a better fit? In some cases, a tablet provides a lightweight alternative to a netbook. But in many cases if you are a student or a business professional, a tablet just won’t cut it.
why?
Tablets run either Android OS, Blackberry OS, or Apple iOS. Each of these operating systems work fine for light computing like checking your email or playing a game, but can’t handle heavy tasks.
Also, the lack of a physical keyboard on a tablet  makes them nearly impossible to write anything longer than a quick email.
In addition, tablets have limited storage and generally do not have the ability to connect to a printer, camera, etc like a netbook does.
To put it in perspective, many tablets are nothing more than large phones without calling capabilities.

Asus has tackled these issues by creating a netbook tablet hybrid. Think of it as a convertible netbook.
The netbook tablet hybrid runs Windows 7, is compatible with all of the software you probably already bought/own, has a full keyboard, and sports a 320 GB hard drive. Try to find that in a tablet. Check it out for yourself!

Best Netbook DVD Writer/Burner

Editor’s Pick:
The Best Netbook DVD-R, DVD-RW, DL, CD-R Writer/Burner – Updated*

Introdcuing our new burning buddy– the Liteon ETAU208-96 Top Load DVD/CD Writer. In case you haven’t heard of Liteon, they are the largest manufacturer of OEM optical drives for top PC manufacturers around the world (think Dell, HP, etc). Just like our previous recommendation for the best netbook DVD burner, the MSI U0882-BK, this little wonder uses a single USB cable (included) for power AND data transfer. When not in use, the USB cable fits snugly in the bottom of the unit, so no more wrapping cords. Imagine that. This DVD/CD writer is not only lightning fast, it’s ultra slim (about the size of a CD jewel case), and even supports Lightscribe to make really cool custom laser etched discs!

And by the way – it’s $66 $29.99 for a limited time.

Get it here:

100 dollar Netbook: The Real Scoop

Can you really get a netbook for 100 dollars? How about a netbook for under 99 dollars?

We at Netbooks Only have been getting numerous inquiries about the $100 netbooks popping up all over the Internet. Are these netbooks real? Are they functional? Could they be a good, cheap, alternative to a pricey laptop for a student or child? Here’s the scoop…

First of all, these 100 dollar “netbooks” are running the Windows CE operating system. You will not find one running Windows 7 or even Windows XP. Not familiar with Windows CE? It was designed for early mobile devices like PDAs (those little things with a pen stylus).

Second, the processor used on these 100 dollar “netbooks” is anywhere from 200-400MHz. Chances are your cell phone has a faster processor…

Third, the on-board storage issue. Did you want to save some videos or files? Forget it…You only have a measly 2GB of on-board flash memory.

While theoretically, you could use one of these 100 dollar “netbooks” to crawl the web, the painfully slow processor coupled with a sliver of RAM (64MB at best), would have you longing for the days of dial-up on your old Windows 95 machine.

This is no exaggeration, as we did check out a few of these cookie-cutter “netbooks”  last year at CES. While it is true you can purchase one of these “netbooks” for 100 dollars, you will be hard pressed to do more than play a game of solitaire before it becomes a $100 paper-weight.

On a budget you say? Here’s a solid alternative: Full-featured Budget Netbook

The Best Netbook DVD-RW / CD-RW Drive

Editor’s Pick:
The Best Netbook DVD Burner

We finally got our hands on the new MSI U0882-BK External DVD Burner. At last, my ASUS 1000HE has a drive worth sacrificing a USB port for. The top loading drive pops open easily (no waiting for an electronic mechanism) and takes nearly any type of disc you throw at it. Besides being just a tad larger than a CD case, the drive requires just one single USB port for power AND data transfer, with no separate power cord. Needless to say my old dual-prong-USB-hording-DVD-RW drive is now a thing of the past. Speed is right up there with an internal drive, and this unit is even kind enough to kick into power saving mode when it sees fit. The included USB cable actual stores snugly into a crevice in the bottom of the unit – leaving no messy wires to wind up when it’s time to run. No matter if your looking for something to play your Netflix movies on, or backup your data on massive DVD Dual Layer discs, this little drive has got you covered. By the way, it also comes in pink, so grab one for your wife or girlfriend while you’re at it. Oh, and to sweeten the deal – it’s less than $50 $40 for a limited time.

WiDi & The Real Scoop on “Blue Label”

The news about Intel’s new wireless display technology is slowly creeping into the main stream, and certainly some form of this technology will make its way to netbooks in the future. You may have seen Best Buy’s commercials on TV promoting their “Blue Label” series of laptops using this new Intel technology. On the surface it sounds great, but when you dig into the specs you discover some unfortunate drawbacks which Best Buy does not disclose on their web site:

  • Compatibility with copy protected DVD movies? – NO
  • Compatibility with copy protected Blu-ray movies? – NO
  • Compatibility with DRM protected media in iTunes? – NO

Official Specs:

Requirements for Intel® Wireless Display
Compatible laptops require the following system components:

  • Processor — ONE of the following: Intel® Core™ i7-620M, Intel® Core™ i5-540M, Intel® Core™ i5-520M, Intel® Core™ i5-430M, Intel® Core™ i3-350M or Intel® Core™ i5-330M processor
  • Chipset — ONE of the following: Intel® HM57, Intel® HM55, Intel® QM57 or Intel® QS57
  • Graphics — Intel® HD Graphics
  • Wireless Networking — ONE of the following: Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200, Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 or Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300
  • Software — Intel® My WiFi Technology and Intel® Wireless Display must be preinstalled and enabled
  • Operating System — Windows 7 (64-bit) Home Premium, Ultimate or Professional
  • Push to TV adapter – Currently offered by Netgear ($99 street price)

The fact that consumers will not be able to watch Blu-ray and DVD movies on their HDTVs will certainly prove to be very confusing, which begs the question: What are some “off the shelf” alternatives to this new technology? Take a look at these:

A. Wireless HDMI transmitter

Brite-View BV-2500 Wireless HD Video Transmitter and Receiver Kits

Pros: Could be used with any HDMI equipped device. Full HD support.

Cons: Price may be steep for some.

B. Wireless USB to TV Adapter

Warpia Wireless USB PC to TV/Projector Display Adapter Kit

Pros: No limitations on media playback. HD playback. Small USB adapter. Can be used on any  Windows PC. HDMI and VGA output with audio.

Cons: PC only

Either one of these alternatives should have you covered. We’ll keep our eyes on this new technology, and hopefully be able to report that all media playback is supported; before some form of this tech officially makes it to the Netbook category.
